Things to Do in World Oceans Day

The ocean as an ecosystem is a crucial part of maintaining the stability of life on Earth.
Marine biodiversity is highly diverse and represents a significant wealth potential, especially in
Indonesia. The ocean also plays a role in regulating the global climate. It absorbs carbon dioxide
from the atmosphere and stores heat, which influences weather patterns and climate.

However, it is very unfortunate that the oceans in Indonesia face various environmental
threats due to human activities, such as overfishing, plastic pollution, ocean acidification,
climate change, and more. Therefore, efforts are needed to prevent damage and manage
marine resources sustainably.

The momentum of World Oceans Day today is the perfect time to raise awareness about
the importance of preserving nature, especially the oceans. Many actions can be taken, such as
organizing educational events like seminars, workshops, and screenings of videos about ocean
conservation, particularly in public places such as schools, universities, or community centers.
Secondly, encouraging public participation in environmental care activities such as collective
beach and shoreline clean-ups, coral reef planting, mangrove forest rehabilitation, and the
preservation of endangered marine species. Thirdly, fundraising to support marine conservation
projects and scientific research related to marine ecosystems. Lastly, initiating anti-plastic
movements in the hope of reducing the amount of non-recyclable waste in the ocean.

After undertaking the various positive actions mentioned above, we as Indonesians can
better understand and cherish the ocean. This also makes World Oceans Day more practically
significant. Let’s follow these steps and celebrate World Oceans Day as a way to free the ocean
from all forms of pollution!
